Researchers are looking into the anti-inflammatory and cancer-fighting effects of diindolylmethane (DIM.) DIM is short for diindolylmethane, a metabolite of indole-3-carbinol. DIM is a compound that can only be made from cruciferous vegetables, such as Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, and Cauliflower. DIM supports the body in producing more favorable estrogen metabolites, specifically 2-hydroxy estrogen (2OH).

How Does it Work?

By supporting healthy estrogen metabolism – encouraging the production of good estrogen and discouraging the production of bad estrogen – your body improves and maintains its estrogen balance. DIM may also be helpful in managing menopausal weight gain. During menopause, your body holds onto estrogen and stores it in fat cells in adipose tissue in your abdominal cavity. The way DIM regulates estrogens also has an impact on how your body stores and distributes fats. Bad estrogens signal your body to hold onto weight, especially in the hips and thighs. But elements in DIM can suppress adipogenesis (the making of new fat cells) and stimulate fat burning.

A study from 2015 looked at how DIM can be an effective ingredient in the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer. The use of DIM was found to be safe and not accompanied by any clinically significant side effects. Current human research doesn’t show DIM supplements to be toxic or have serious side effects. The most common side effects include darkening of the urine, an increase in bowel movements, headaches, and gas. Less common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and skin rash.

Diindolylmethane may help the liver work more efficiently, so if you’re on prescription medication that the liver is primarily responsible for breaking down, it’s possible that your medication may not stay in your system long enough to be effective. Always let your doctor and pharmacist know if you’re taking DIM and any other supplement so that they can advise you about interactions.

DIM is a compound with a myriad of potential hormonal health benefits for women. By modulating estrogen and estrogen metabolism, DIM may help women with various hormonal difficulties. Because it helps move estrogen down the pathway that produces more favorable estrogen metabolites, DIM may be useful for women struggling to balance estrogen. It may also help maintain breast health and could prevent painful breasts (mastalgia).

One study found that DIM supplements are more effective than DIM that comes from food. Because the huge amount of cruciferous vegetables necessary to make a noticeable difference would be impractical for most people, supplements may be a more practical and more effective alternative. Supplements may provide better absorption as well.
